After the PhD

The PhD in Food Science, Technology and Biotechnology is a highly qualified figure to address the problems that the food system is encountering with a view to increasing the sustainability of food production, transformation and consumption.

The functions in a work context are the following:

  • Direction, administration and management functions of companies operating in the sector of production, transformation, conservation, distribution and marketing of food;
  • Responsible for the quality and safety control and assurance of food raw materials, finished products, additives, technological aids, semi-finished products, packaging and anything else relating to the production and processing of food products;
  • Responsible for the definition of standards and specifications for the aforementioned products.

The skills associated with the functions are as follows:

  • Skills to direct, administer and manage businesses in the food production, transformation, conservation, distribution and marketing sector;
  • Skills to control and ensure the quality and safety of food raw materials, finished products, additives, technological aids, semi-finished products, packaging and anything else relating to the production and processing of food products;
  • Competence for the definition of standards and specifications for the aforementioned products.

Possible employment opportunities are:

  • Food Industries and all companies connected to the production, transformation, conservation and distribution of food products;
  • Large-scale retail trade companies;
  • Public and private bodies that conduct planning, analysis, control, certification activities, as well as scientific investigations for the protection and valorisation of food production;
  • Training bodies;
  • Freelance (after qualification to practice as a food technologist).
